Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
