British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
