Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
