Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
