Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
