Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to contest certain calls made by the official, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
